Tomato 18 Sep, Tania from Hyde (New Zealand - cool/mountain climate)
I sow mine in late Sept in trays which i then put in the bottom of a large Sistema container with lid...I pop this out in the sun during day...moving lid around for heat and close it at night...if really cold pop in shed with a blanket....or do the same in the tunnel house....it double walls/protects...you can always throw a rug over the sistema for extra....in the morning undo the sistena and before long you have healthy plants. When planting out, i use cardboard boxes to cover at night, as less condensation and if really cold night.....pop that big Sistema over the cardboard box...really helps with protection. Had great sucess over the last few years. Also put sheep dags over the soil in the winter and dig them in before planting out...great microbiome and nitrogen for soil.

Copper copper copper I had same problem last year onions, garlic and leeks sometimes gardening is a pain but I still do it ??? Remember to use a sticker "sprayfix" by yates is one but most garden chemical people do similar it helps to break down the surface tension so the spray does not just run off do it before it appears and repeat it several times during the season only problem with it raining constantly it's hard to do right now. P.S. my mum used to grow welsh onions in the UK when I was a boy never saw enything like rust ?
Strawberry Plants 05 Jun, Murray Dillner - (New Zealand - cool/mountain climate)
Hi, I livein a cold climate during the winter, how do I look after strawberry plants when they stop flowing. They have heaps of runners. Do I cut them off and store in a container out of the cold? Should I cover them and keep the frost off them and leave in the ground? Novice grower of strawberries Thanks Murray Lake Tarawera Rotorua
Strawberry Plants 07 Jun, (Australia - temperate climate)
If you spot any dead or dying leaves on your strawberry plants, go ahead and pluck them off. This will make way for new leaves to sprout up. When it comes to runners it depends on how old the plant is. During the initial couple of years, it's a good idea to snip off the runners as soon as they pop up. This way, the plant can channel its energy into producing more fruit. However, once the third year rolls around, you can start utilizing some of those runners to create new plants through propagation. If you're worried about frost, you can try mulching them. Or, if you prefer, use a row cover, burlap, or even plastic to cover and protect them.
Silverbeet (also Swiss Chard or Mangold) 30 May, Trish (New Zealand - temperate climate)
Hi, I have no issue growing spinach, but I haven't been able to grow silverbeet for a long time now. Any ideas please? Also, can I dig my fresh lambs pellets from the farm into my garden?
Silverbeet (also Swiss Chard or Mangold) 01 Jun, (New Zealand - temperate climate)
Grow the right time of the yearn. Good rich soil, water regularly and full sun.
Silverbeet (also Swiss Chard or Mangold) 01 Jun, (New Zealand - sub-tropical climate)
Don't put fresh manure into soil where you are going to plant soon. It needs to breakdown first.
Pak Choy (also Pak choi) 02 May, Nida (New Zealand - temperate climate)

Parsnip 26 Feb, Paula (New Zealand - temperate climate)
I must be missing something. Doesn't it say that parsnips need frosts to finish them off. But this says to start planting seeds in July. Then 20 odd weeks from then is Summer? Wouldn't you start them at the end of summer so they are nearly ready by winter? Thanks
Parsnip 03 Mar, (New Zealand - sub-tropical climate)
I grew parsnips in a frost free area last year.
Parsnip 28 Feb, (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
I think you don't have to have frost but is preferable. Different planting times for sub-tropical, temperate and cool climates. Probably to do with germination temp required.
Parsnip 26 Feb, Liz (New Zealand - sub-tropical climate)
It does actually say to leave parsnips in the ground until after frost (as they will be sweeter) . These are not hard and fast rules, just an indication of the best times to sow/plant seeds.
Pumpkin 21 Feb, Debbie (New Zealand - temperate climate)
I planted 3 pumpkins in October, all different varieties. One has not produced any female flowers and the other two have any just produced two little pumpkins this month (February) . They are healthy plants with an abundance of male flowers. My qustion is will they ripen before it gets too cold?

Back off fertilising it and cut the watering down.
