Ginger 01 Mar, Lauren (South Africa - Summer rainfall climate)
Just buy a ginger root from your local grocery store. Look for pieces that have what look like little shell like points along the root. Those are the growth points. Carefully cut the root into pieces, trying to keep as much root as possible around the points - this is where your new plant will get its starter nutrients, so the bigger it is the better the chance it will grow. Bury those about 5cm below the surface of your soil and water well. This makes a stunning indoor plant because when the leaves get big enough if you brush against them they give off a lovely spicy smell.

It should grow fine just in potting soil but might need some extra fertilizer like watering with liquid seaweed as potting soil can be quite low in nutrients.

I have a North to South property boundary partition wall and a grapevine runs under that wall. i have Rosemary and Chives growing on the ground under the vine shielded from direct sunlight. This has a sort of greenhouse effect as the well drained soil remains moist. Chives love used teabags as fertilizer.

I planted my asparagus seeds in oct/nov last year in a tuna tin with a clingwrap cover, creating a greenhouse almost. I have now planted them outdoors in planters, and they have shot up. I do think growing from seeds take a while, however, I'm quite content to wait. It seems like its quite a rewarding plant to wait for :)
