Luffa (also Loofah, plant sponge) 17 Sep, Terri (USA - Zone 8a climate): Loofa need a long time to mature. 5 months or more. I planted mine late this year. Late May. They were full vines without flowers until late July. Now they are full of flowers and loofa. I am not sure how late you planted them but they may just not be mature. Another thing may be too much nitrogen in the soil.switch to phosphorus based to get the plants focused on flowering.

Tomato 18 Jul, Jessica (USA - Zone 10a climate): The best tasting tomato depends on what you value in a tomato. There are thousands of tomato varieties and you just need to find one that you like. I suggest you start with indeterminate heirlooms first, unless you a beginner gardener, then I would go with Hybrids. Good luck with your harvests.

Okra (also Ladyfinger, gumbo) 08 Jul, Sai (USA - Zone 10a climate): I planted Okra seeds indoors late June. They are about 3-5 inches now. The weather in my 10a zone has been 50s-70s. When should I plant the seedlings in my garden bed?

Asparagus 06 Mar, Evan (USA - Zone 9b climate): I put crowns in last summer and cut the canes down in the late fall. I now have first asparagus in March. Should I let them grow and not pick them?. No frost here. 1200 feet up and maybe 4 miles from the ocean in California. Fog at night in May-July but sun during the day. Warm to hot fall.

Broccoli 14 Jun, Patricia Foster (USA - Zone 9b climate): Here in central Florida, we grew enormous broccoli plants but they never produced anything, even after six months growing. We put the seedlings in the ground in October in a marl soil that retains moisture and also used plenty of compost and some 10-10-10. Any ideas what went wrong or what we should do to amend the soil?

Broccoli 24 Jul, colleen (USA - Zone 10b climate): This has happened to me a couple of times in the South too, with various cole crops. Have you grown this variety of broccoli in this location and at the same time of year before, with success? The reason I ask is, some brassicas require vernalization (a sufficient number of cold temperatures before they flower/head) and some types may be photoperiod sensitive (waiting for days to get short enough/long enough to trigger flowering/heading). Did you have an especially warm winter? Definitely make sure you're growing a variety that's best suited to your latitude, and are growing it at the suggested time of year. I hope you at least got to eat your plants! The leaves are a delicious consolation prize. Also! Important tip: always leave broccoli roots in the ground when you harvest the plants. Decaying broccoli roots are toxic to verticillium dahliae, a stubborn soilborne fungus. Broccoli is worth growing for that reason alone!

Broccoli 26 Nov, anon (USA - Zone 9b climate): - It sounds as though you have over fertilised them with far too much NITROGEN. N produces growth - leaves. Also grow them into the cooler winter months. DO NOT grow them into the hot summer months.

Broccoli 12 Aug, Roland (USA - Zone 9b climate): Patricia, I experienced the same last year in zone 9b. Not a single head or side shoots. After six months I pulled the plants and put them in the compost. Nothing goes to waste in my garden.

Luffa (also Loofah, plant sponge) 08 Jun, Linda (USA - Zone 9a climate): I have 3 Luffa plants potted , about 3” tall and healthy. They are ready to be put in ground. Now I am stuck. Full sun, part sun , keep wet, keep dry... central Florida on the river. Please help.

I put one in full sun, one in part sun and one in complete shade. They are all growing at the same pace but with one exception: the one in full shade has zero luffa. The other two each have 5 very large ones.

Brussels sprouts 04 May, Tina (USA - Zone 9b climate): I planted my brussel sprout in early October I trimmed back all the lower leaves and I'm barely starting to get fruit now it's the first weekend in May and I'm getting little fruit about the size of a pencil eraser does it normally take this long?

Brussels sprouts 28 May, Nicole (USA - Zone 9b climate): We planted ours in September. Our plants got huge by February but the actual sprouts remained tiny...and spicy! We discovered how delicious the leaves are so now we grow brussel sprouts for the leaves, rather than the brussels themselves :)
